The first summer school in Herculaneum papyrology will be held in Naples, 11-15 September 2017. It is dedicated to the memory of Graziano Arrighetti and organized by the Centro Internazionale per lo Studio dei Papiri Ercolanesi “Marcello Gigante”, in collaboration with the Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici of the Università di Napoli Federico II and the Biblioteca Nazionale “Vittorio Emanuele III”. Professors F. Longo Auricchio, G. Indelli, G. Leone and G. Del Mastro will be the coordinators.
The summer school is open to 12 participants who have received a M.A. (Laurea triennale or magistrale in Italy) or equivalent degree or PhD in the field of classical studies.

The school will cover the following topics: the history of scholarship on the papyri, including their unrolling, the contents of the Herculaneum library, the bibliological and paleographic aspects, the techniques for editing the texts, and Epicurean philosophy. The participants will be assigned an unpublished papyrus. The results of the week of study will be discussed in the presence of the members of the Centro and other teachers of the school in the afternoon of Friday 15 September.

The registration cost is 150 euros, and includes the teaching materials and other materials. It should be paid in one of the methods indicated in the letter of acceptance.

Applications should be submitted to the Centro before 16 June 2017, either via post (to prof.ssa Francesca Longo Auricchio, Centro Internazionale per lo Studio dei Papiri Ercolanesi «Marcello Gigante», Via Porta di Massa 1, 80133 Napoli, with the note Scuola estiva di Papirologia ercolanese) or by email (info@cispe.org or gianluca.delmastro@unina.it). They should contain a curriculum vitae (including permission to use personal data) and a letter of recommendation by a university teacher. Applicants will be notified of the results via email on or before 8 July 2017.
